Static Filtration

Clean intake air is the first line of defense for any gas turbine, compressor or engine. Burgess-Manning static filtration systems remove dust, moisture, salt, hydrocarbons and industrial pollution from combustion and ventilation air before it reaches your rotating equipment. The result is sustained performance, lower maintenance and a longer service life even in continental, offshore, tropical and cold-climate sites.

A static filtration system is a fixed, multi-stage air filter house that cleans the air entering turbomachinery. Unlike self-cleaning (pulse) systems, the filter elements stay in place and capture contaminants until they are replaced. This makes static filtration the preferred choice where the priority is the highest final air quality and protection against moisture, salt and sticky or oily contaminants.

Air passes through progressive stages, from coarse to fine: inlet weather protection, pre-filters, fine filters and a high-efficiency final barrier. Each stage protects the next, so the system holds a low, stable pressure drop and a long service life between filter changes.

Minimum Information Required For Getting A Quote
  • Air flow rate (m³/h or ACFM)
  • Turbine / compressor / engine make and model
  • Site conditions: climate, altitude, dust load, salt and humidity exposure
  • Required filtration class or target final efficiency
  • Available footprint and orientation constraints
  • Material, coating and corrosion-class requirements
  • Applicable design codes and certifications
  • Acoustic / noise requirements (if combined with intake silencing)

Burgess-Manning static filter houses use a multi-stage arrangement to balance the three factors that determine intake filter performance: filtration efficiency (how clean the air is), dust-holding capacity (how long the filter lasts before changeout) and pressure drop (the energy penalty the turbine pays to draw air through the filter). Stripping out coarse particles early keeps the high-efficiency final stage clean, which protects turbine output and extends filter life.

Why it matters: Fine particles that reach the compressor cause fouling of the blades, gradually reducing output and efficiency, while salt and reactive contaminants cause hot corrosion. A high-efficiency final filter stage keeps blades clean and helps prevent unplanned shutdowns.

  • High final filtration efficiency up to E12 / MERV 16

Air intake filter elements for rotating equipment are classified under ISO 16890 (fine-dust efficiency, ePM1 / ePM2.5 / ePM10) and tested under ISO 29461 (air intake filter systems for rotary machinery). High-efficiency filter elements are available according to EPA/HEPA (EN 1822 / ISO 29463) and ASHRAE MERV (52.2).

Relevant Industries

Oil and gas refineries, natural gas processing plants and LNG facilities represent remarkably intensive and acoustically challenging industrial environments, generating intense noise levels from complex processing equipment, high-pressure systems and continuous operations. Hydrocarbon processing facilities require comprehensive noise control solutions to ensure worker safety, regulatory compliance, community relations and operational efficiency.

Power plants generate both energy and significant acoustic energy. Excessive noise can endanger employees, affect equipment longevity and violate local and international regulations. Burgess-Manning custom-engineers silencers for turbines, compressors, blowers, generators and transformers.

Industrial applications generate considerable noise as a result of high-capacity machinery, continuous operations and complex infrastructure. Without proper noise control, these environments can pose risks to employee health, disrupt surrounding communities and violate environmental and occupational noise regulations. Implementing tailored noise mitigation solutions of acoustic walls, noise barriers and silencers while utilizing acoustic modeling, CFD, FEA and noise measurements to design solutions not only supports safety, but also enhances operational efficiency and community relations.

Static Filtration FAQ

A static filter is a fixed, multi-stage air intake filter house that cleans the air entering a gas turbine, compressor or engine. The elements stay in place and capture contaminants until they are replaced, rather than being cleaned in service.

Pressure drop is the resistance the intake filter adds to airflow. For a gas turbine it is a continuous power and fuel penalty, so a well-designed static filter holds a low, stable pressure drop across its service life.

Static filtration is best where the priority is the highest final air quality and protection against moisture, salt and sticky contaminants. Self-cleaning (pulse) systems suit very high, dry dust loads such as desert or arid mining sites. Site air quality and dust load determine the right choice.

Fine particles foul compressor blades and reduce output, while salt causes hot corrosion. A high-efficiency final filter stage keeps blades clean and helps prevent unplanned shutdowns.
