Acoustic Louvers

Acoustic louvers are an industrial noise control solution for ventilation systems and plant equipment including air handling units, chillers, heat pumps and HVAC systems. Acoustic louver screens provide weather protection and visual screening while reducing noise levels and can also be used as barriers or enclosures around plant items that require high airflow.

Acoustic louvers work by absorbing sound waves in an airstream through an absorbent layer contained within the louver blades. The angled nature of the blades prevents a direct line of sight from the front to back of the louver module, enhancing the level of noise reduction achieved.

Louvers can be manufactured from a variety of materials including pre-galvanized sheet steel, pre-coated and colored steel and stainless steel. Larger items are normally supplied in modular form for assembly on site. Large acoustic louver banks with fully integrated support steelwork systems can also be provided, designed to withstand wind loads.

Materials: Pre-galvanized sheet steel, pre-coated and colored steel and stainless steel.

Noise Reduction:
Double banked acoustic louvers can provide up to 20 to 25 dB of noise reduction depending on the frequency spectrum of the source noise. Louvers are available in a number of depths to suit project requirements.

Testing:
 Independently tested to ISO 10140-2:2010.

Options:

  • Birdguard: Welded mesh fitted to the rear of the louver, fixed to the cassette or removable if required.
  • External Flashing: Folded sheet metal flange, supplied loose and finished to match the main louver for aperture masking.
  • Mounting Frames and Support Steelwork: Available where facades cannot support the louver’s weight.
  • Louver Doors: Doorsets with louver cartridges in a steel framework, supplied with frame, hinges, D-handle and deadlock with internal thumbturn.
  • Industrial and Heavy Duty: Fully welded units for high-durability industrial use.
  • Penthouse Louvers: Supplied with support steel, flashings and pitched roof. Can be factory-assembled depending on size for ease of installation.

Relevant Industries

Oil and gas refineries, natural gas processing plants and LNG facilities represent remarkably intensive and acoustically challenging industrial environments, generating intense noise levels from complex processing equipment, high-pressure systems and continuous operations. Hydrocarbon processing facilities require comprehensive noise control solutions to ensure worker safety, regulatory compliance, community relations and operational efficiency.

Industrial applications generate considerable noise as a result of high-capacity machinery, continuous operations and complex infrastructure. Without proper noise control, these environments can pose risks to employee health, disrupt surrounding communities and violate environmental and occupational noise regulations. Implementing tailored noise mitigation solutions of acoustic walls, noise barriers and silencers while utilizing acoustic modeling, CFD, FEA and noise measurements to design solutions not only supports safety, but also enhances operational efficiency and community relations.

Acoustic Louvres FAQ

Acoustic louvers are manufactured from sheet metal and reduce noise transmission from plant equipment that requires airflow. Airflow passes through an acoustic louver while the sound-absorbing insulation built into the louver blades provides noise reduction.

Acoustic louvers work by absorbing sound waves in an airstream through an absorbent layer contained within the louver blades. The angled nature of the blades prevents a direct line of sight from the front to back of the louver module, enhancing the level of noise reduction achieved.

Acoustic louvers are used in ventilation openings for plant rooms, HVAC systems, air source heat pump enclosures and barriers and chiller installations. They are commonly specified where noise emissions to nearby noise-sensitive locations must be controlled.

Double banked acoustic louvers can provide up to 20 to 25 dB of noise reduction depending on the frequency spectrum of the source noise. Louvers are available in a number of depths to suit project requirements.

Standard weather louvers provide weather protection and visual screening but offer little acoustic performance. Acoustic louvers are significantly deeper, incorporate sound-absorbing materials and are specifically designed to reduce noise transmission from ventilation systems and plant equipment.

Acoustic louvers create a resistance to airflow due to the profile and thickness of the blades. Each louver is sized based on plant airflow requirements to ensure minimal back pressure on the ventilation system.
