Acoustic Blankets and Materials

Acoustic blankets are a flexible noise control solution for fixed plant machinery including pumps, fans, compressors and other industrial equipment. Where a full acoustic enclosure is impractical or unnecessary, a Burgess-Manning acoustic blanket provides targeted noise reduction at the source without restricting access to the machine.

Each acoustic blanket is custom-manufactured to fit the specific geometry of the equipment, including irregularly shaped machinery and installations with limited clearance. Blankets are fitted with Velcro strips or eyelets for straightforward installation and removal, making them well suited to applications where routine maintenance access is required.

Weather-resistant configurations are available for outdoor installations, with outer coverings engineered to withstand water ingress, UV exposure and temperature extremes. The range also includes industrial wall lining for noise absorption within factories and processing plants and acoustic room lining for controlling sound reflections in test rooms and other noise-sensitive environments.

Construction: Acoustic blankets consist of a mass barrier core combined with acoustically absorbent insulation, stitched into a flexible outer PVC-coated polyester sheet. The mass barrier core blocks the transmission of sound while the insulation provides acoustic absorption and separation from the mass layer.

Noise Reduction:
A blanket wrapped around a heavy fan or pump set will provide a reduction of around 3–5 dBA. A suspended blanket to the front of a plant area may reduce noise by up to 10 dBA. Actual performance depends on the frequency spectrum of the source noise.

Materials Available:

  • Acoustic foam
  • Damping sheets
  • Composite products
  • Industrial wall lining
  • Acoustic room lining

Fixing Options: Velcro strips or eyelets for easy installation and removal.

Relevant Industries

Oil and gas refineries, natural gas processing plants and LNG facilities represent remarkably intensive and acoustically challenging industrial environments, generating intense noise levels from complex processing equipment, high-pressure systems and continuous operations. Hydrocarbon processing facilities require comprehensive noise control solutions to ensure worker safety, regulatory compliance, community relations and operational efficiency.

Industrial applications generate considerable noise as a result of high-capacity machinery, continuous operations and complex infrastructure. Without proper noise control, these environments can pose risks to employee health, disrupt surrounding communities and violate environmental and occupational noise regulations. Implementing tailored noise mitigation solutions of acoustic walls, noise barriers and silencers while utilizing acoustic modeling, CFD, FEA and noise measurements to design solutions not only supports safety, but also enhances operational efficiency and community relations.

Acoustic Blankets and Materials FAQ

Acoustic blankets are flexible noise control solutions comprising a mass barrier layer and acoustically absorbent filling housed within a PVC-coated polyester outer sheet. Blankets absorb and block sound waves to reduce noise across a range of applications, from construction sites and industrial warehouses to plant equipment such as pumps and compressors.

Performance depends on the equipment and installation type. A blanket wrapped around a heavy fan or pump set will provide a reduction of around 3 to 5 dBA. A suspended blanket positioned in front of a plant area may reduce noise by up to 10 dBA. Actual performance depends on the frequency spectrum of the source noise.

Acoustic blankets reduce noise through a combination of sound absorption and sound transmission loss. The dense mass barrier layer blocks sound transmission while the fibrous absorbent filling absorbs sound energy, reducing noise levels at the source.

Acoustic blankets are used across a range of industrial applications including temporary noise control on construction sites and as equipment coverings for large pumps, compressors, fans and other fixed plant machinery where a full acoustic enclosure is impractical or unnecessary.

Weather-resistant configurations are available for outdoor installations. Outer coverings are manufactured from vinyl, canvas or bespoke materials engineered to withstand water ingress, UV exposure and temperature extremes.
