Modular Vent Silencers

Vent silencers are used to control the very high noise levels associated with venting pressurized gases to the atmosphere, such as steam, natural gas, air, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen or any other combination of compressed gases.

Burgess-Manning vent silencers are typically installed on relief, safety, control or start-up valves in steam boilers, HRSGs, gas compressing stations, FPSOs and most oil, gas and chemical processing plants. They are also used in any industry where compressed gases are utilized.

Modular vent silencers have been developed to address the needs of customers that need a working and reliable silencer, delivered quickly, without spending unnecessary time and money to specify every step of the design and manufacturing process. With almost a century of proven experience, Burgess Manning is proposing turnkey solutions to quickly solve your most common venting noise issues.

Modular silencers are not standard silencers: they are customized to meet your specific acoustic and pressure drop performance requirements and are fully compliant with ASME B31.1 and PED 14/68/EC or UKCA as applicable.

Right from the time of proposal, you already know what you will get, based on the provided silencer datasheet and GA drawing. Base offer is based on primed carbon steel welded construction, with butt weld connection and drain, self-supported on the discharge pipe, saving the cost for additional supporting structure.

But as we know that each site is different, you can also choose to add options:

  • Flanged connections
  • Supporting Brackets
  • Bird Screen
  • Rain Hoods

Industrial applications generate considerable noise as a result of high-capacity machinery, continuous operations and complex infrastructure. Without proper noise control, these environments can pose risks to employee health, disrupt surrounding communities and violate environmental and occupational noise regulations. Implementing tailored noise mitigation solutions of acoustic walls, noise barriers and silencers while utilizing acoustic modeling, CFD, FEA and noise measurements to design solutions not only supports safety, but also enhances operational efficiency and community relations.

Modular Vent Silencer FAQ

Modular silencers offer faster lead times, predictable performance, reduced engineering effort, simpler installation and lower overall project risk.

A modular vent silencer is built from standardized, pre‑engineered modules that can be combined to meet specific flow rates and noise guarantees with faster delivery than custom designs.

Modular vent silencers are typically self‑supporting, reducing the need for additional steel structures and simplifying installation.

Lead time depends on silencer type and project complexity. Standard or modular silencers can often be delivered within weeks, while fully custom designs typically require longer engineering and fabrication schedules.

With proper design, material selection and installation, industrial silencers can operate reliably for decades. Service life depends on operating conditions such as temperature, corrosion, erosion and duty cycle.

Silencer performance is measured by noise attenuation in decibels (dB), insertion loss, pressure drop and mechanical integrity under operating conditions. Performance guarantees are defined at specific measurement locations.
