Noise Control For Natural Gas Compressor Stations
The Burgess-Manning Blowdown Separator/Silencers are installed at Natural Gas Compressor Stations, storage facilities and Midstream Processing Plants to reduce the noise generated by the rapid venting of compressed gas to the atmosphere either during a scheduled maintenance blowdown or an emergency blowdown scenario. The silencer/separator also removes suspended liquids from the gas stream prior to being expelled to the atmosphere.
Available options with the Burgess-Manning Blowdown Separator/Silencer include the restriction orifice, a double domed weather hood to minimize the potential of rain collecting in the silencer while also allowing for the gas to escape unencumbered to the atmosphere, a liquid collection sump with liquid level gauge and/or liquid level switch, and a drain valve to drain the collected liquids.
Applications & Industries:
Midstream Industry – Compressor Stations, specifically silencing the safety relief valve for emergency shutdown of compressor stations.

Acoustic Principles:
Transformative: Blowdown style vents focus on a third type of transformative attenuation that focuses on shifting the noise peak frequency. Blowdown silencers will use absorptive-type attenuation if the customer requires higher attenuation
Product Features & Benefits:
- Controlled Blowdown Time: Achieved through a uniquely designed multi-stage diffuser and upstream restrictive orifice(s).
- Acoustic Design: Ensure the silencer meets stringent acoustic requirements while maintaining the most cost-effective design.
- Liquid Separation: Integration of a separation component in the diffuser to separate hydrocarbon liquids and reduce environmental pollution.
- Ejection Height: (any height) Providing sufficient dispersion to ensure safety for workers and the surrounding environment.
- Compact: We have a compact design, offering added benefits of minimal installation, footprint, and reduced transportation costs.
- Depressurization Rate: Ensuring we don’t blow out compressor seals by controlling the depressurization rate/blowdown time
Design:
- Shape: round or rectangular
- Max Diameter: Silencer of >4m diameter delivered.
- Max height: Delivered up to 40m
- Cores: normally up to 5 – special cases we did with 7
- Materials: any metal
- Medium: Natural gas
- Design is contingent on the type of venting gas, molecular weight, initial pressure & temperature of gas, the volume of the gas to be blown down, the desired blow down time, valve size & type (if known, piping layout between valve and silencer, silencer inlet size & type, and the silencer sound level requirements.
Design Codes:
- Structural design ASME B31.8 standards
Add-On Separation Component to Diffuser
Blowdown silencers have the option to integrate a separation component in the diffuser. During venting of the natural gas compressor station or pipeline hydrocarbons are knocked out by the integrated separator and collected in the sump of the silencer.
Blowdown Separator/Silencer Applications
- Natural Gas Compressor Stations
- Storage Facilities
- Midstream Processing Plants
- Safety and Relief Valves
Control Blowdown Rates
Burgess-Manning engineers can properly size and incorporate a restriction orifice to be installed upstream of the silencer to control the blowdown period and/or control the rate of initial blowdown if required to protect the compressor unit from damage caused by rapid decompression.
